Dosages

Bacterial infections
  • Oral
    • 8 years up to 12 years
      • Initial dose: 4 mg/kg/day in 1 dose. Max: 200 mg/day.
      • Maintenance dose: 2 - 4 mg/kg/day in 1 - 2 doses. Max: 200 mg/day.
    • 12 years up to 18 years
      • Initial dose: 200 mg/day in 1 dose
      • Maintenance dose: 100 - 200 mg/day in 1 - 2 doses.
Severe acne vulgaris
  • Oral
    • 8 years up to 18 years
      • 100 mg/day in 2 doses.
      • After the inflammatory phase has been reduced, the maintenance dose can be brought back to 50 mg once a day or 100 mg every two days if the clinical effect justifies it.

Renal impaiment in children > 3 months

GFR ≥10 ml/min/1.73m2: Dose adjustment not required.

GFR <10 ml/min/1.73m2: A general recommendation on dose adjustment cannot be provided.

Side effects in children

Gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, rare cases of pseudomembranous colitis and staphylococcal enteritis, negative effects on bones and teeth in children. Intracranial hypertension [Fraser 2012]. Rhabdomyolysis has been described in a case report [Kempeneers 2013].

Warnings & precautions in children

Treatment of children aged 8–12 years should only be considered when other options are ineffective or contraindicated. Crossover sensitivity and crossover resistance can occur between tetracyclines. Deposition in growing tooth tissue causes permanent discoloration of the teeth.
