Pharmacokinetics in children

The laxative effect occurs after a few hours. It may however take several days before the desired effect is achieved.
Lactitol is not absorbed or hardly absorbed in the small intestine; its effect occurs in the colon.

Constipation
  • Oral
    • 1 year up to 6 years
      • 0.5 - 1 g/kg/day in 2 - 3 doses.
      • Directions for administration:

        Preferably to be taken before a meal.

      • Adjust the dosage to the patient’s needs.

    • 6 years up to 12 years
      • 10 - 30 g/day in 2 - 3 doses.
      • Directions for administration:

        Preferably to be taken before a meal.

      • Adjust the dosage to the patient’s needs.

    • 12 years up to 18 years
      • 20 - 60 g/day in 2 - 3 doses.
      • Duration of treatment:

        Adjust the dosage to the patient’s needs.

      • Directions for administration:

        Preferably to be taken before a meal.

Renal impaiment in children > 3 months

GFR ≥10 ml/min/1.73m2: Dose adjustment not required.

GFR <10 ml/min/1.73m2: A general recommendation on dose adjustment cannot be provided.
