Sickle cell anaemia
  • Oral
    • ≥ 9 months

      • Initial dose: 15 mg/kg/day in 1 dose
      • Maintenance dose: depending on the clinical response, increase in steps of 2,5-5 mg/kg/day to 15 - 30 mg/kg/day in 1 dose. Max: 35 mg/kg/day.

Renal impaiment in children > 3 months

Creatinine clearance 30-60 ml/min: 50% of the dose
Creatinine clearance < 30 ml/min: do not use

Side effects in children

In children, the side effect profile is similar to that in adults. However, neutropenia was more common in children aged 2–10 years, and dry skin, alopecia, headache and anemia were less common than in adults. In children aged 10–18 years, dry skin, skin ulcer, alopecia, weight gain and anemia were less common than in adults.
