General Dose Info

  • The adsorption capacity of the pharmaceutical formulations varies; a suspension is more effective than tablets or capsules. In cases of intoxication, the suspension should therefore be used and not the tablets or capsules.
  • Combination with laxative:

    • When activated charcoal is administered once, laxative is indicated only when ingesting toxins that reduce intestinal peristalsis.

    • When activated charcoal is administered repeatedly, laxative is indicated on the basis of stool pattern.

    • Sodium sulfate as laxative: 0.5 g/kg/dose PO (max 30 g), repeat as necessary
Caution: use of laxatives may induce electrolyte disturbances
