Post-exposure prophylaxis rabies
  • Intramuscular
    • 0 years up to 18 years
      • IMMUNO COMPETENT CHILDREN
        Unvaccinated:

        Essen regimen: 1 dose on day 0, day 3, day 7, day 14 and 28 (5 injections)
        Alternative: Zagreb regimen: two doses (2 injections) in two different body parts on day 0, followed by 1 dose on day 7 and day 21 (4 injections in total).
        Combined use with antirabies immunoglobulines only indicated in type III exposures
        Vaccinated:
        1 dose on day 0 and day 3 (total of 2 injections) 

        IMMUNOCOMPROMISED CHILDREN

        • Unvaccinated: 1 dose on day 0, day 3, day 7, day 14 and day 28 (total of 5 injections), combined with antirabies immunoglobulines  on day 0 (or at least within 7 days of exposure)
        • Vaccinated:
          1 dose on day 0 and day 3 (total of 2 injections), combined with antirabies immunoglobulines  on day 0 (or at least within 7 days of exposure)



         

      • Administer into the deltoid muscle, or in young children into the anterolateral part of the thigh. Do not inject into the gluteal muscle.

    • 0 years up to 18 years

Warnings & precautions in children

When the primary vaccination series of this vaccine is administered to very premature infants (born at 28 weeks gestation or earlier), the potential risk of apnea and the need for airway monitoring for 48-72 hours should be considered, especially in children with a history of respiratory immaturity.
