It is also contraindicated in neonates in salicylate intoxication.

Warnings & precautions in children
The solution with a pH of 10-11 gives severe problems on extravasation (tissue necrosis). This must not be administered in peripheral vessels and in the vessels of the umbilical cord. Use the solution with pH 8.6.
