Constipation. After rectal administration, especially in children: there is a risk of intestinal obstruction due to clumping of the resin, and of haematochezia in premature infants and neonates with a low birthweight.

Watch out for obstipation. Check the plasma concentrations of sodium and potassium regularly. Rectal administration requires special care in low birthweight neonates and premature infants due to the risk of digestive haemorrhage or colon necrosis, especially in cases of excessive dosing or inadequate dilution.
