Problems with availabiliity of the drug
  • Route of administration not applicable
    • 0 years up to 18 years
      • VariQuin will be unavailable for a long time. That is why the Dutch Health and Youth Care Inspectorate has given permission for VariZIG to be imported without the inspectorate’s prior individual authorization.

Prevention of varicella (chicken pox)
  • Intramuscular
    • < 2 kg
      • 125 IU/dose, once only. In the event of further exposure, repeat the dose at least 3 weeks later..
      • Directions for administration:

        Administer slowly, deep intramuscular. The preparation should preferably be brought to body temperature before administering it.

      • There is only any point administering it if the contact with a varicella zoster patient was not more than 72 hours ago.

    • 2 up to 10 kg
      • 250 IU/dose, once only. In the event of further exposure, repeat the dose at least 3 weeks later.
      • Directions for administration:

        Administer slowly, deep intramuscular. The preparation should preferably be brought to body temperature before administering it.

      • Administer as quickly as possible, preferably within 3 days and by no later than 10 days after there was contact with a varicella zoster patient.

    • 10 up to 30 kg
      • 500 IU/dose, once only. In the event of further exposure, repeat the dose at least 3 weeks later..
      • Directions for administration:

        Administer slowly, deep intramuscular. The preparation should preferably be brought to body temperature before administering it.

      • Administer as quickly as possible, preferably within 3 days and by no later than 10 days after there was contact with a varicella zoster patient.

    • ≥ 30 kg
      • 625 IU/dose, once only. In the event of further exposure, repeat the dose at least 3 weeks later..
      • Directions for administration:

        Administer slowly, deep intramuscular. The preparation should preferably be brought to body temperature before administering it.

      • Administer as quickly as possible, preferably within 3 days and by no later than 10 days after there was contact with a varicella zoster patient.

Renal impaiment in children > 3 months

GFR ≥10 ml/min/1.73m2: Dose adjustment not required.

GFR <10 ml/min/1.73m2: A general recommendation on dose adjustment cannot be provided.
