Dosages

Fluid resuscitation in burns
  • Intravenous
    • 0 years up to 18 years
      • Initially: 4 ml/kg/day per % of total body surface burned

      • Half the calculated volume is given in the first 8 hours and the other half in the next 16 hours. Monitor the diuresis per hour.

        Combined with a maintenance glucose-salt infusion:
        < 10 kg: 100 ml/kg/24 hours
        for every kg in bodyweight between 10 and 20 kg: +50 ml/kg/24 hours
        for every kg in bodyweight between 20 and 30 kg: +20 ml/kg/24 hours
        Example: a child weighing 25 kg: 1000 ml + 500 ml + 100 ml

Fluid supplementation if the acid-base equilibrium is not disturbed or in mild acidosis, isotonic and hypotonic dehydration, recovery of the intravascular volume as a short-term treatment
  • Intravenous
    • 1 month up to 12 years
      • 20 - 100 ml/kg/day, continuous infusion. Average infusion rate:
        1 month to 1 year: 6-8 ml/kg/hour
        1-2 years: 4-6 ml/kg/hour
        2-11 years: 2-4 ml/kg/hour.
    • ≥ 12 years
      • Up to 40 ml/kg/day, continuous infusion. Infusion rate: max. 5 ml/kg/hour.
