Warnings & precautions in children

Chlorhexidine must not be swallowed. In young children aged (< 5 years), apply the fluid using brushes.

Chlorhexidine solution must not be mixed with physiological saline, because that significantly reduces the effect. The drug has a bitter taste and often causes brown discolouration of teeth (incl. molars). The latter effect is amplified by toothpaste that contains fluoride and orally administered antibiotics, in particular amoxicillin suspension. The toothpastes Elmex® and Zendium® do not contain sodium lauryl sulphate and can be used together with chlorhexidine. After the treatment, the discolouration can be removed by polishing the teeth. In local treatment with nystatin, the treatments with chlorhexidine and nystatin should be at least 30 minutes apart.
