Dosages

Hypokalaemia
  • Oral
    • 1 month up to 18 years
      • Dose depending on the plasma potassium concentration.

  • Intravenous
    • 1 month up to 18 years
      [2]
      • Dose depending on the plasma potassium concentration, maximum of 2-3 mmol/kg/day

Do not give undiluted as a bolus. Be aware of the potential for arrhythmia when infused too fast: the maximum concentration for a peripheral line: 0.08 mmol/ml, i.e. add a maximum of 40 mmol to 500 ml.

Maintenance requirement for potassium in TPN
  • Intravenous
    • < 3 kg
      [1]
      • 1 - 2 mmol/kg/day, continuous infusion.
      • = 1-2 ml/kg/day at a concentration of 7.5% (potassium concentration of 1 mmol/ml). Dose depending on the plasma concentration

    • ≥ 3 kg
      [1]
      • 1 - 3 mmol/kg/day, continuous infusion.
      • = 1-3 ml/kg/day at a concentration of 7.5% (potassium concentration of 1 mmol/ml). Dose depending on plasma concentration.
